Crab Lasagna - A Delectable Twist to an Italian Classic
Most everyone remembers spending some time at a family member's house eating a big meal with the whole clan. For me, it was always a wonderful time to catch up and eat to my hearts content. Grammy would have something good going on the stove, and I always found myself smiling with a full stomach afterward. Every once in a while though I would be surprised to see a different set of hands preparing the meal. Grandpa liked to mix it up and don the apron at times - making Grammy's night relaxed and filling ours with new and different delights. One of his calling cards was taking an entree we all enjoyed and adding something unexpected. I can't remember a time it didn't turn out well. This is one of my favorite examples of his handiwork.
Two things that are great apart, and fantastic together. Crab Lasagna.
INGREDIENT LIST
(2) 12 oz packages of lasagna
1 lb of King Crab, Flaked
(1) 4oz can of dried or diced mushrooms, drained
2 tbs butter
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 minced garlic clove
4 cans tomato sauce
1 can tomato paste
1 tsp minced parsley (double if fresh)
1/2 tsp dill weed
1/2 tsp oregano
1/8 tsp basil
1 large tub sour cream
1 ball mozzarella cheese, grated
1lb Sharp cheddar, grated
salt
olive oil
grated Parmesan cheese
PREPARATION
Saute onion, garlic, & mushrooms in the butter until golden brown. Stir in tomato sauce and paste. Add spices, and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Now add crab and simmer for another 15 minutes until sauce has thickened.
Meanwhile, cook the lasagna at a gentle boil (adding 2tbs olive oil and 1 tbsp salt as desired) for about 15 minutes. Test for readiness by poking a suspended noodle with a fork. If it goes through easily, they are likely done.
Remove the noodles from the heat and wash thoroughly under cold water. Layer the bottom of a pan (9x13 is a good size) with enough sauce to wet it down, then lay the lasagna length-wise to cover the bottom completely. Cover the noodles with sauce. Next, sprinkle them with each cheese and shake on the Parmesan. Then spot on the sour cream and smooth out the whole layer. Place the next layer of noodles perpendicular to the first and repeat the process until you run out of pan or material. Make sure to sprinkle the last layer with Parmesan.
Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Let stand after cooking for 15 minutes. Cut into squares and serve!

Completely Broke This Year? No - Cost Holiday Ideas!
Sometimes our budget is stretched beyond its limits. I've been there plenty of times. Although I do my best to give my kids a decent holiday, there may not always be money left over for the adults on my list. What do I do in this case? Following are a few of the no-cost holiday ideas I've used over the years. They're always such a big hit I often wonder why I go back to my traditional holiday routines, but old habits die hard.
1. Coupons or IOUs
Buy a small stocking or jewelry gift box from the dollar store and fill it with IOUs.
For instance, some notes to my boyfriend may be a promise to wash his car, clean his bathrooms (they need it, trust me!), do his laundry for a week, bake a batch of cookies, make him a special dinner, or give him a nice back rub. You can throw in some naughty IOUs too; our partner always appreciates those! ;-)
With my friends I may offer to watch their pets or water plants when they go on vacation, bring over some chicken noodle soup and a crossword puzzle book when they're sick, bake a casserole one night so they don't have to cook, or babysit when they want to go out one night.
For an elderly neighbor I offered to run some errands, walk her dog, and remove some unneeded programs and check for viruses on her computer.
*A word of warning here: Don't offer more than you can give. A couple of really nice IOUs will be well-received and quickly used, but won't wear you out in the process as you try to fulfill them all.
2. Send electronic cards
The cost of stamps goes up every year and if you've got ten or twenty people on your list that can add up! Not to mention the cost of the cards themselves. Sending e-cards may seem rather lazy or tacky, but when you're broke it's the only way to wish your loved ones a Merry Christmas without going broker! I love the free e-cards on http://www.Hallmark.com
Be sure to personalize each e-card instead of sending out a mass email. People appreciate a personal note from you letting them know how much you care, and perhaps sharing a warm or funny memory you have of them. Last year I reminded my one daughter how much we all laughed when we went sledding and she toppled over, slid down the hill, and lost her pants on the way!
3. Write an ebook
No, you don't have to be Stephen King or Hemmingway. Anyone can make a nice ebook with little effort and just a few hours' time. You can create an ebook of favorite recipes, quotes, a collection of helpful articles, or whatever else that special someone may be in to. Use free photos from sites such as http://www.FreeRangeStock.com then turn it into a PDF file quickly and easily at http://www.FreePDFConverter.com No, you don't have to turn it into a PDF file, but it looks more professional that way. :) I made an ebook of favorite family recipes for my oldest daughter last year and she loved it.
4. Create a collage
Find some favorite photos you have duplicates of and glue them to a piece of poster board. This no-cost gift may sound a bit cheesy, but everyone loves to see photos of people they care about or pictures that have special memories. I did a collage for my mom one year with photos of all her grandkids and added a funny saying or memory we all shared. I wrote them on small slips of construction paper and glued those below some of the photos. It hung on a wall in her bedroom where she could see it everyday.
5. Offer your services
This one kind of falls in the same area as the IOU suggestion, except you'd offer someone a finished project based on your area of expertise. If you're a mechanic, you can offer to perform an oil change. Are you really good at math or history? Offer to tutor someone who's still in school. I wrote some free articles for friends' websites. My son-in-law took some professional photos for a friend of his. Think about something you're good at and offer your services free-of-charge.
6. What about the Christmas tree?
When you're flat broke, buying an expensive tree that will just die within a week is about the last thing on your list. However, it's part of the holiday tradition. When you have absolutely no money for a tree here are a few ideas.
Go to a Christmas tree lot and ask if you can have some of the branches they've cut off. Tie some branches together with string or twine and make a wreath or bough then decorate with whatever ornaments you have around. No, this isn't a Christmas tree, but it's still festive nonetheless!
Another idea is to decorate a tree or bush that you might have growing in your front or back yard. My oleander tree looked very festive on year!
A large plant could stand in for a Christmas tree if you have one in your home. I've never been that lucky since I tend to kill anything potted.
7. Homemade gifts
Okay, I said these were no-cost ideas and this is kind of stretching it, but if you have craft or baking supplies around the house use them to your advantage. Everyone loves handmade goodies, whether it's a crocheted scarf or a batch of sugar cookies. Whenever I'm broke I go into a crafting mode and start thinking up things I can make for the people on my list. The more people you have to make gifts for, the sooner you need to start or you'll quickly become stressed out. Afghans are NEVER on my list!
8. Start new holiday traditions
Instead of mourning over a lack of money, use your imagination and come up with some new and fun traditions you can share with your family. Sing holiday carols together, string popcorn and hang it on the tree (if you have one this year), make Christmas Eve the night you play board games together, or drive around and look at the decorated houses then come home and have cocoa. Making special memories are what last in our loved ones minds, while expensive gifts are quickly forgotten. I can't remember what I got for Christmas last year, but I do remember how we tried our hand at making vegan tamales! My girls and I had a great time preparing them and they came out pretty good.
Who says Christmas has to be expensive? All it takes is a little ingenuity and you can probably come up with a dozen more no-cost holiday ideas. In the process, you're creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Cliff Diving
Adding a new dimension to the sport of diving, cliff diving is defined as the acrobatic perfection of diving into water from a high cliff. Braving the rough rocks, divers take a plunge in the hard-hitting water beneath to experience a thrill to last for a lifetime
The sensational sport originated from the Hawaiian Island of Lana´i in 1770. Kahekili, the king, demanded that his men leap off high cliffs and enter the water feet first without a splash, to prove their courage and loyalty. Today, after centuries, the activity has expanded into a sport that is marked by immense courage, focus, thrill and risk.
This exciting sport requires a sound technical education and extensive training before one takes the first plunge. Apart from courage, self-confidence, extraordinary physical control and possessing the ability to make quick decisions is a must for this extreme sport. Unrelenting courage, uncompromising focus and the ability to make crucial decisions in a second are what make a successful cliff diver.
Cliff diving is one of the riskier kinds of diving; hence, extreme caution is a must. To the benefit of the divers, certain standards have been set to minimize the risk factor. Some of these include determining the height of the jump (23 - 28 meters for men, 18 - 23 meters for women), an ideal entering speed of 75 - 100 km/h, and a free fall time of 3 seconds.
Cliff diving is usually done in areas surrounded by calm waters. There are innumerable enticing natural sites all across the world that offers locations for this sport. Apart from a recreational activity, this extreme sport has also been taken up as a profession by brave hearts who continually conduct spine-chilling shows for the audience at various venues all over the globe.

How to Make Desserts With Pasta
Pasta is one of the best staples because you can make so many recipes with it, but did you know that you can also use pasta to make dessert recipes? Perhaps you are more familiar with traditional recipes like chocolate mousse or jello, but pasta is fun to work with, for both savory and sweet dishes.
Pasta has actually been used to make desserts in Eastern Europe since the 1800s, when sugar was available. Only the rich could afford sugar, but desserts like flat noodle pudding with raisins, cinnamon, sugar and cottage cheese were very popular when served after dinner during that era.
Using Jello for Dessert Pasta Recipes
There are various desserts you can make with pasta and you might even like to combine pasta with jello. What about cooking some pasta and making jello salad recipes? Simply make up some jello and stir it with the pasta and some cream or cottage cheese, fruit and nuts.
Another option is to make some kind of chocolate fettuccine dessert or sweetened fruity pasta and have a layer of jello either underneath or on top. Use your imagination and you will come up with some really creative jello ideas for pasta desserts.
An Easy Recipe for Dessert Lasagna
This delicious recipe is so simple to make. You can use different fruit if you want. Strawberries, blackberries and melon also work well, as do kiwi and banana. This sweet lasagna recipe proves that pasta is just as good for making desserts as for making savory Italian recipes.
This dessert lasagna needs to chill overnight so make it the day before serving. It makes enough to serve six people.
What you will need:
12 lasagna noodles
1 cup sugar
4 cups raspberries
4 cups pineapple chunks
4 cups ricotta cheese
1/2 cup toasted, sliced almonds
6 peeled peaches
Chocolate ice cream syrup, to garnish
How to make it:
Cook the lasagna noodles. Combing half the sugar with the ricotta cheese. Puree half the peaches with 2 tablespoons of the sugar. Clean the bowl and puree half the pineapple chunks with 2 tablespoons of the sugar. Clean the bowl and puree half the raspberries with 2 tablespoons of the sugar. Chop the remaining fruit into small chunks.
Use 3 lasagna noodles to cover the base of a 13 x 9 inch baking dish. Spoon 1/3 of the cheese on top and spread it over. Pour the peach puree on top, and then arrange the chopped peaches on it. Top that with 3 more lasagna noodles and half the remaining ricotta. Pour the raspberry puree over the ricotta, followed by the chopped raspberries. Top that with 3 more lasagna noodles and the rest of the ricotta.
Pour the pineapple puree on top, followed by the pineapple chunks. Top with the rest of the lasagna noodles. Cover the dessert lasagna with plastic wrap and chill it overnight in the refrigerator. Serve with the toasted almonds and remaining sugar sprinkled over the top and the chocolate sauce drizzled over.

Liverpool's Greatest Ever XI
It is always an interesting topic of debate, to name the greatest ever, in any denomination, because people of different eras always believe that their era produced the best.
Well this is my list as regards players that I have witnessed play. Some of my choices no doubt, would be open to serious contention, some might be undisputed and some would make look a laughing stock but we cannot always be right.
Goalkeeper
Bruce Grobbelaar was good, sometimes, eccentric, sometimes erratic but usually very good. He would be always famous for his noodle knees wobbling in the penalty shoot out against Roma that so put off Graziani, that he blazed his kick well over the bar.
I never saw too much of Tommy Lawrence so I cannot pass judgement on his prowess so I have gone for Ray Clemence who was just a superb goalkeeper and should have won more caps for England but for the presence of the equally brilliant Peter Shilton.
Right Back
In a position that over the years has produced arguably the least number in outstanding candidates in any team, I have gone for Phil Neal, though Steve Nicol and Gary Gillepsie ran him a close second. Rob Jones started off brightly but lost his way after a while.
Left Back
Alan Kennedy was a very good and capable full back as is John Arne Riise. Avi Cohen was very good as well but I have opted for Steve Staunton.
Centre backs
This was a dilemma for me as Ron Yeats was thought to be a very good and solid defender, out but I never saw him play so it is difficult for me to judge how good he was. Phil Thompson and Mark Lawrenson were just edged.Mark Wright was good as are Jamie Carragher and Sami Hypia.
Tommy Smith started out as a very good central defender but I have gone for Alan Hansen and Emlyn Hughes who were calmness and passing ability and enthusiasm respectfully personified for defenders. They could both bring the ball from defence quite easily and Emlyn Hughes could actually play competently as a midfielder. He scored a lot of goals with his long range shots.
Midfield
There have too many fantastic midfielders like Ronny Whelan who was one of my favourites, Steve McMahon, Steven Gerard, Xabi Alonso, Jamie Redknapp, Ray Kennedy with his sweet left foot, Sammy Lee and Terry McDermott for their effervescence.
But my middle pairing would be Jan Molby for his passing ability and Graeme Souness because he was 1 of the most complete players to have played the game.
My left sided midfielder would be John Barnes who just edged it against Steve McManaman and Stevie Heighway. At his best he was 1 of the most exciting players for Liverpool ever.
Forwards/strikers
Again, there have been quite a few excellent strikers that have played for Liverpool and I am sure 1 of my choices would not meet with universal approval. Michael Owen, Roger Hunt, John Aldridge, Peter Beardlsey and most of all Ian Rush deserve mention as they were all fantastic for Liverpool but I have gone for 3 of my favourites and they are King Kenny Dalglish, King Kevin Keegan and "God", Robbie Fowler
My favourite Liverpool team however out of all the countless championship winning teams, is the Kenny Dalglish side that included, Hansen, Whelan, Beardlsey, Barnes, Rush, Aldridge, McMahon, Houghton and Ablett. They played the best football of any Liverpool side I had ever seen

Protein on the Go - Convenience and Availability
Protein is found in virtually every place that you look. It is needed for every cell in the body. It is found in many different food sources, from the obvious (chicken and beef) to the surprising (milk and soybeans). Think carefully about your day yesterday: did you get up in the morning, eat a slow and steady breakfast and then get ready for work? Did you work steadily until it was time for your lunch, opening your carefully packed lunch bag to see what kind of well-balanced foods that you have brought to stave off the midday starvation feeling? Did you leave work at the end of the work day and drive straight home, relaxing with the newspaper and perhaps a few minutes of television before sitting down to a hot and home cooked meal? Did you have a small snack before you went to bed, sleeping peacefully and restfully for at least eight hours so that you could face the next day fresh and new? Of course you didn't.
If you are like the average person, you have no time for a sit-down meal the majority of the time, and you probably eat most of your meals on the run, not stopping to think about what those meals are made of. You are either getting far too many calories per day, none of which are healthy and balanced, or you are not getting enough at all. Either way, you are probably looking in the mirror and feeling pretty miserable. There are 34 million people in the US who are classified as obese, some of which can be related to the lack of time to eat properly as well as a lack of exercise and other factors.
The average person currently has about 16 hours per week for leisure activities, which follows a continuing decline in free time. Not so long ago, the average person went to work each day of the work week (Monday through Friday). They spent the weekends relaxing, spending time with the family and doing yard work. There were no cell phones, computers or handheld devices that kept us logged on to work whether we were there or not. The more that technology becomes popular and more widely used, the less time that we have for ourselves. Much of the time that the average person has is counted as "gray" time, defined as not quite work or not quite leisure time. Most people are checking into their social media sites (Twitter, MySpace and Facebook) while they are at work and they are checking in with their offices while they are out and about. So, where does this leave time for healthy foods?
Food Options on the Road
While we are traveling to and from errands, to and from work and taking the children to all of their activities and events, we are bombarded with food choices. The meals that you get at the typical fast food place are loaded in fat and calories. There is protein, of course, but can it really count as being a good thing? There are ways to minimize the damage that these foods cost your daily diet and your overall health, but it is better if you minimize the number of times that you eat it at all. Getting your protein while you are heading out to work or just looking at spending yet another day in the car is not all that hard. You should back a well-balanced lunch and include snacks to keep yourself from starving between meals. Protein supplements are a good choice and can be stashed in a pocket or purse to eat or drink between meals. Here are some of the best choices in protein supplements and what to look for in each:
- Protein bars. Some brands of protein bars are nothing more than glorified candy bars, with more sugar and calories than is really needed. Each bar should be less than 200 calories for the average sized person and should not have added sugars.
- Protein shakes. Again, some brands of these can be loaded with excess sugars and fats and may not have very much protein in them at all. Look for a can or bottle that has enough protein to stave off hunger but not so many calories that they you would be better off with a regular milk shake.
- Protein puddings. Quick to eat and satisfying to most people, the puddings are typically small and can be great to eat between meals. They are also recommended for right before a meal so that you can eat smaller portions without experiencing feelings of deprivation. Puddings may not be easy to eat on the run however.
- Protein powders. One of the most difficult types to carry along, the powders are typically mixed with water or other liquids and taste best when they are well mixed. Again, not an easy supplement to bring along with you on the road.
- Protein shots. One of the easiest ways to get your protein is with the liquid protein shot.
When Should You Eat Protein?
The experts suggest that you eat at least some protein with every meal. Every meal and snack should be well-balanced, with the largest meal being breakfast. Protein, as well as fiber, will help to keep you feeling full and satisfied for far longer so that you can make better choices throughout the day. Spreading your daily calories out throughout the day means that you are never running on empty - never going to lunge for the vending machine at three o'clock, hip checking Phil from accounting out of the way so that he does not get the last mallowmar. Most people eat three large meals each day and then forget the snacks that they end up wolfing down in between, and then they cannot figure out why they keep gaining weight. Instead, they should divide their larger meals into smaller meals so that they are eating roughly every three to four hours.
You Can Eat Well on the Go and Still Get Enough Protein
In addition to the various protein supplements that you can stow and go, you can find healthier food choices at the fast food restaurants which will minimize the damage. After all, there are some times when you absolutely have to break down and grab a small meal. Here are a few choices that are halfway decent:
- Wendy's Mandarin Chicken Salad with roasted almonds (and no crispy noodles). If you have to have salad dressing, use reduced fat creamy ranch. Both the chicken and almonds are good sources of protein. Side dish choices: small salad (with no croutons), chili, mandarin orange cup or a baked potato (you can top it with the chili or with marinara sauce).
- McDonald's Fruit and Walnut Salad (walnuts are excellent sources of protein) or Caesar Salad with grilled chicken. Side dishes: the fruit and yogurt parfait. Apple slices are another good choice, however, do not eat the caramel dip.
- Burger King's BK Veggie Burger (with no cheese and no mayo) or Tendergrill Chicken Sandwich (with no sauce). Sides: side garden salad
- Taco Bell's Spicy Chicken Soft Taco (You can make most food choices better by eliminating cheese, sour cream and opting for chicken instead of beef whenever there is a choice offered.)
- Arby's: Although most would think that the sandwiches are lean roast beef, they actually have a lot of fat. A better choice for calories and protein is the chicken breast filet.
Who Else Wants to Discover the Thrill of a Spaghetti Maker?
If you like to cook and love pasta then you will want to own a spaghetti maker for your home. Simple recipe includes flour, eggs and salt. You simply combine the three ingredients and work them with a fork until the mixture can no longer be stirred. AT that point, you will need to work the flour over and over with your hands. This is a simplified version and you will want to experiment with your own recipes. Of course, recipes and pictures come with every spaghetti machine so it will be quite easy to follow one of theirs as well. Home made pasta is a pleasure that everyone should have an opportunity to enjoy and you will be able to do just that with a spaghetti maker. Whether you decide on the manual version or the electric version with the proper care of your machine you should enjoy pasta for a long time.
Pasta origins are very ancient it is said that they go back actually to the china people They used pasta to prepare the first lasagna made of cake a kind of cereal like wheat, but far more resistant against bad weather and diseases. Later on the Romans used it to make a very simple dough with water and flour from which they made a kind of dish called ravioli. This word is used also today in the center and in the south of Italy to call a special kind of pasta dish. Anyway we must explore the myth that it was John Cabot who brought pasta to Italy when he came back from china. In fact, in 1279 a. d. , when the great venetian explorer was still in the east in a will was drafted with which a certain prince that bequeathed a crate full of macaroni to pay a debt to John Cabot. Certainly we know that the Arab already in the XI century brought pasta around the Mediterranean basin, but it spread in an extraordinary way to Italy,Then in 17th century in Italy pasta met tomato where it arrived in Europe after America was discovered. But pasta did not go at once onto the princes' tables because since then it was eaten using hands. It was near the year 1700 that a chamberlain of king Frank a certain prince had the brilliant idea of using a fork with 4 short prongs that became a common practice. Since then pasta was served during the courts' banquets all over Italy and from there its world tour began. Also president Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) was mad about pasta and introduced it to the US. his banquets were famous and his chiefs served mainly pasta. Then, at the beginning of last century, the first, spaghetti makers were invented so pasta production spread out in a lot of nations. This overall process makes pasta the most known Italian food all around the world. . So now you know the rest of the story
All spaghetti machines comes in many different colors to match your kitchen decor. You can go the old fashion way with the hand crank witch is cheaper or get the electric if time is an issue. Spaghetti makers have a dial to gauge the thickness and you can make round or flat noodles. You can get attachments to make ravioli vermicelli and angel hair and many others. When you get your noodle roller machine and create your first pasta dish you want believe the difference in the taste compared to the store brands. What better of a way can you get your family together to discuss every ones day bond and start teaching your children the art of cooking. The spaghetti maker i suggest that you get is the atlas pasta maker.
