Lessons Learned at the Beijing and Athens Olympics

If you are planning on heading to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London you will want to go well prepared. Hav ea look at these lessons I learned after trips to both the Athens and Beijing Olympics.

Travel Between the Venues Can Take a Long Time

Despite the excellent transportation facilities, extra taxis and fewer regular traffic on the roads, travelling between the venues in Beijing could sometimes take an hour or more. The city is just so big and some of the venues were extremely spread out which meant long journeys between events. With this in mind, make sure you plan accordingly. Look at the London 2012 venue map in advance and don't book tickets to events that are on opposite sides of the city unless you have a couple of hours in between.

Tickets Can Be Bought and Sold At the Event

If you didn't get an event you really wanted to go to or if your country is doing really well and you want to follow them, just head to the venue an hour early and ask around for tickets. In my experiences there are always plenty of tickets on offer, especially if you are willing to pay a bit more for them. Likewise, if you want to unload extra tickets, you should be able to do it before the events starts.

Food Inside the Venues is Terrible

In both China and Greece I would have expected the food to be excellent. Sadly and strangely though, it wasn't. Food inside the venues consisted mainly of junk food like cookies and chocolate bars. In Athen the only 'real' food options were pizza and hotdogs and, in Beijing, you could buy mysterious self-heating noodle boxes complete with a huge amount of plastic packaging, but only at some of the events. Fortunately, beer was cheap!

Dressing Up Makes Everything More Fun

In Beijing, my friend and I made sure to get all geared up for each event. If either of our countries (Australia or Canada) weren't competing, we put on our China t-shirts, hats and flag caps and went in support of China. It was a huge crowd pleaser and we met loads of friendly locals this way and made our way into plenty of their photo albums, no doubt. So to spice the whole experience up, come with a good supply of flags, t-shirts, wigs, face paint, funny hats... whatever you can think of.

Come Prepared to Party

The Olympics are all about sports by day and partying at night. If you want to party, you will always have somewhere to do it at any hour of the day. It can be tough to keep up with the pace so go prepared for many sleepless nights and a lot of time spent partying with athletes and other fans from all around the world.

Bring Some Items to Trade

Olympic fans love to trade things. Whether it be the ever popular pins, flags of your home country, hats, shirts, noisemakers, inflatable hockey sticks and kangaroos... it doesn't matter. If you come with things to trade, you will leave with a lot of interesting souvenirs from all around the world.

China King - A Dim Sum Delight in Chandler

Today we felt as if we were back in China, or perhaps San Francisco's authentic Chinatown. Instead we were in Chandler, Arizona, feasting on a favorite lunch: Dim Sum. We're not sure how many of you have experienced Dim Sum. We always find it special as the assortment of dishes are rolled around the restaurant and you pick out the items you want. No guesswork, it is all there in front of you, inviting you to taste and enjoy. We have our favorites, and today we added some new dishes.

The Hill team, joined by several friends, enjoyed a lunch of crispy shrimp dumplings, steamed BBQ buns, crispy egg rolls, tasty spare ribs, shrimp Shy Mai, and Hun Sui Gok. The fresh bright green vegetables that accompanied each tender morsel melted in our mouths. Norm was partial to the Lotus Seed Jin Dui, Baked Egg Tart, and Baked Egg Custard Buns. They satisfied his sweet tooth. Of course, food lovers can also order chow mein, duck, noodles, fried rice and a large variety of sea food, all fresh, including lobster.

When we return, perhaps tomorrow, we will order the seafood in a clay pot, or the sizzling plate of scallops and shrimps. All this with prompt and friendly service, and the joy of seeing families enjoying a meal together as they sit around a large round table. Wherever we have lived, except for Boston, New York and San Francisco, we have found it difficult to find delicious, authentic, Chinese food, especially Dim Sum, at such a reasonable price. Now we can indulge. We urge you to try this treasure and would enjoy knowing if you enjoyed it as much as we did.

China King is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner, but Dim Sum is served at lunch only. China King is located at 1050 W. Ray Road, in Chandler, Tel 480 899 8099. For Dim Sum to go the fax is 480-812-8989. Any part of this article may be reproduced as long as the authors are given credit.

Noodles and More at Noodle Bar - Restaurants in Hyderabad

What you see - Simple yet elegant, and small yet big, the Noodle Bar at Hyderabad Central offers a lot more besides loads of noodle delights. Now it seems to be a modestly sized restaurant from the foyer but the saying, 'Looks can be deceptive' turns out to be dead right with this one! Because very soon you will learn that the three juxtaposed restaurants - Bombay Blue, Noodle Bar and Copper Chimney - are owned by a single family and come under the Blue Foods banner.

Enter into any of these three restaurants where glass acts as a dividing wall, and you, by all means will get a feel of being present in one huge restaurant. Though the kitchens are separate since they serve different cuisines, the bar is common for all the three. The bar serves cocktails, mocktails and alcohol.

What you get - Basically serving lunch and dinner, the menu at the Noodle Bar features Thai, Japanese, Chinese and other types of Oriental cuisine and is quite vast with both the starters as well as the main course. One good thing about the menu is that it is self-explanatory. If the quaint names of some of the dishes make you wonder, then the accompanying description give you a lucid account of what to expect.

Try their special Tom Yam Thai (Thai soup with noodles, veggies and wantons) and dim sums for starters. Another specialty of the place is the Teppanyaki sizzlers. Try these out if you would like to get an idea of the Japanese style of cooking. These are available in both the vegetarian and the non-vegetarian variety.

If you, however, are of the kinds who prefers to stick to what you usually eat then go ahead and get your own choice of tossed noodles made. The servings here are (more than) sufficient for one person. Otherwise the Noodle Bar Signature - a combo of rice and noodles with vegetables - can stand as a meal in itself. By the way, there is no better way of ending it than with the sizzling brownie here. A scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with heavenly hot chocolate fudge is how we would define it.

The verdict - If your craving for a perfect Chinese luncheon has remained unfulfilled of late, then Noodle Bar is a good and a gratifying option. Veggies have enough to choose from over here even though it serves non-vegetarian food as well. You need not wait long for your meal to arrive here. Hospitality, in fact, may just become another reason for you to step in again. All in all, a great way to end your shopping endeavor at Hyderabad Central.
